Venue Spotlight: Hull
Since opening our first Game of Throwing venues in 2021, we have gone on to open axe throwing experiences in eight different locations, with six more coming soon. Initially a creator of Escape Rooms, we branched out to Axe Throwing after trying it out once and becoming hooked ourselves!
Among the first venues to open was Game of Throwing Hull, which already housed Escape Rooms and expanded to include axe throwing. I sat down with the manager of our venues in Hull, Joe, to find out more about his journey with opening Axe throwing.
Hi Joe, can you tell me more about Escape Hull? What games do you have there?
We opened one of our Escape rooms in 2016 and expanded to include our second venue soon after. We currently have six Escape Rooms split across two sites, which are within easy walking distance to each other.
At Parliament Street we have:
Witchcraft & Wizardry
Operation Odyssey
221B Baker Street: The Scarlet Study
And at Dock Street the games are:
The Cabin
Escape the Seven Seas
Darker Side of Hull
Since each room can fit up to 6 players, our venues are perfect for big group bookings. Each of our venues can fit up to 18 people at one time, so that’s a group of 36 people split across both sites at any one time!
We also have four axe throwing lanes at Dock Street, which is great for people who want to come along and try out both!
Tell me more about the axe throwing lanes you have. Are they suitable for people of all ages and abilities?
We opened our Game of Throwing lanes in May of 2021 and honestly, it’s so much fun. My staff love going through the training and coming up with competitions for themselves and for customers to keep honing their skills. We have four lanes, each of which can fit 5-6 players, so great for parties and corporate events because you can book more than one lane at the same time!
Although it’s not suitable for children under 10, any adult can come and give an axe a throw! We provide full safety instruction and support throughout your time with us so you can improve your technique. You can also come and test your skills with our interactive Champ Throw lanes.
What exactly is Champ Throw?
It’s a system we use which uses real axes on an interactive projected target screen. That means instead of the standard wooden bullseye at the end of the lane, you can choose between over a dozen fun games to play with our axes. Some of my favourites include:
Duck Hunt - based on the original Nintendo game of the same name, you aim for ducks as they attempt to fly away
Monster Crush - kind of like Candy Crush, you score points by aiming for monsters of the same type
Horde Attack - you aim for cartoon Orcs moving across the screen. We had fun with a zombie version of this at Halloween
Throw Royale - you have to knockout your opponents by aiming for the targets they’ve already claimed and win as many targets as you can before the time runs out
Bullseye - as the name suggests, this is your classic axe throwing target, though it doesn’t always stay in the same place!
The fun part is, the system is self-scoring - it records individuals’ scores so you can automatically tally up your team’s leader board, and even get on the site-wide leader board if you’re good enough!
Do we have to do anything special or wear anything in particular to take part?
Axe throwers should wear closed-toe shoes, so no sandals or flip flops! Other than that there are no restrictions. We recommend flat shoes and comfortable clothing but that’s just advice, not a rule. And for our Escape rooms there is no dress code. Not all of our rooms are wheelchair accessible, however, so do get in touch so we can recommend which ones you’ll enjoy.
Any other advice to people wanting to book with you?
I would recommend booking in advance online, or by giving us a call, so you don’t turn up to be disappointed because there’s no rooms or lanes available. Check out our FAQs if you have any further questions and don’t hesitate to contact us if you can’t find the answer you’re looking for.
We hope to see you soon!!
